I know I’ve got an African obsession, but, I defy you not to fall for Zulucow’s fresh new line of dramatic ‘faux trophy’ wall art! Our unique beaded heads are a funky, fresh new take on the craze for faux trophy animal heads in our homes. Add a unique style to your home; an exotic African edge, straight from the African savannah. African animal motifs and African prints are definitely on trend at the moment, so why not set a new African wall art trend too!
This Spring 17, we are launching an exotic new line to compliment Zulucow’s high quality, luxury cowhide accessories and home interiors. Exquisite beaded African antelope, buffalo and wildlife heads and gorgeous animal sculptures, all skilfully crafted by talented Zimbabwean and South African street artists; helping to produce much-needed, incomes for their families.
Zulucow’s stately antelope and buffalo heads hold their own in an entrance hall, living room or bedroom and make a perfect companion to an existing faux trophy wall, and an original alternative to the felt, resin or material animal trophy heads you can find at: notonthehighstreet.com or at Rockett St George , John Lewis or Cox and Cox etc.
Over the years, Patrick (husband) and I have always picked up quirky African pieces on our travels as mementoes of special places: from the funky little wooden warthog made of a small log and twigs from the Luangwa Valley in Zambia; brightly patterned candles and a cheeky wooden ‘cat’ footstool from Swaziland; together with various wire tortoises; beaded keyrings and the obligatory tall wooden giraffe from the roadside in South Africa. (Doesn’t every flight from SA to Europe include at least half a dozen wooden giraffes carefully wrapped in newspaper?!)
More recently I’d noticed the exquisite, beaded trophy heads and animal sculpture, being sold on street corners in Johannesburg. I was struck by how perfectly they depicted various African animals. We stopped and went a bit overboard buying a Kudu, Buffalo, and Warthog head; gorgeous multicoloured giraffes; buffalo and an Nguni cow head ( ‘Zulucows ‘being a bit of a passion of mine!) oh, and the funky chicken and guinea fowl egg baskets of course!
Since then, friends have often admired the majestic wall art and animal sculptures in the house. So on business trips back home visiting our Zulucow artisans and business partners, (who produce our exquisite sustainably-sourced cowhide rugs and craft our high end cowhide bags and accessories) we’ve re-established links with our talented Zimbabwean artisan friends: Mike and Nyvasha in Joburg. And so our new line in beaded animal heads and sculpture; and more recently ‘rock and roll’ tin buck, rhino and lion heads was born!
Mike, Nyvasha and their talented artisan friends finely and skilfully craft each piece by hand with steel wire and beads. I am constantly amazed at the beautiful, African buck heads and animals they produce: they craft them so accurately.
Zulucow’s more recent ‘tin’ trophy heads are made out of coke cans (ie. rubbish on the street) which resourceful street artists re-work with wire to construct tin animal head wall hangings – Quite incredible!
African decorative pieces; its funky prints and animal motifs are definitely on trend; so why not add an African flavour to your home with a piece of unique, Zulucow wall art (and help produce an income source for Mike, Nyvasha and their talented street artist colleagues in Johannesburg?!
